RE:  Follow Up on Availability of Model for Neighbors at the Community Center

Dear Tom,

We appreciate the response of your staff Desiree Leigh regarding our request that the model you have prepared to illustrate proposed expansion at Children’s be on display at the Laurelhurst Community Center.  We do not understand why you are imposing restrictions on making the model available to our neighbors.

Desiree suggested that the model would be available on a few specific dates at specific times and that your staff will be available to respond to questions.  It will be extremely difficult to publicize when the model is on display if you limit access as you have proposed.  We see no need to have your staff on hand to explain the model.  The model speaks for itself.  Dena Schuler, the Community Center Coordinator, has indicated that the model could be on display in the lobby in the line of sight of front desk staff.  This eliminates any security issues.  Your informational materials would, of course, be welcome as well as materials from other points of view offering alternatives.

No other community has requested that your model be made available at their community center.  Children’s is located in the Laurelhurst neighborhood and it makes good sense that the model be on display in our neighborhood at our community center.  The community club will be certain to notify the Ravenna Bryant Community Association, the Montlake Community Club, the Hawthorne Hills Community Association and the View Ridge Community Council of the availability to view the model at our center.  Desiree indicated that the model would be made available at other community centers.  Neither Hawthorne Hills or View Ridge have community centers.  We are confident that all surrounding communities would welcome the opportunity to view the model at our newly expanded and very beautiful Laurelhurst Community Center.

We would appreciate it if you would work with us, rather than continuing to impose obstacles to neighbor involvement in the master planning process.
