RE: Naming Blakeley Crescent Park

Dear Parks Naming Committee,

The Laurelhurst Community Club Board of Trustees recommends that you retain the name Blakeley Crescent Park for the park under development on the south of NE Blakeley between 25th and 27th Avenue NE along the Burke-Gilman Trail. We believe that this name meets the criteria for official naming of park and recreation facilities.

About two years ago, representatives from the Northeast District Council worked with the Seahawks on the Neighborhood Enhancement Element of the EIS for the Seahawks interim use of Husky Stadium. In a Memorandum of Understanding, the Seahawks committed to provide $80,000 in seed money for the creation of what we call Blakeley Crescent Park. Friends of Blakeley Crescent Park was formed and has since work to develop park plans and to successfully secure additional funding. The major donors, including Councilmember Cynthia Sullivan, the Silver Cloud Inn and the University Village all thought they were contributing to the development of Blakeley Crescent Park. It makes no sense to change the name of the park at this point.

We note that the criteria require consideration of geographical location, historical or cultural significance and natural or geological features. The park is located on NE Blakeley Street, so the current name takes into account the geographical location. As for the historical significance of the current name--aside from the history we have provided above, the name Blakeley Crescent is used in the University Community Urban Center Plan on pages III-32 and III-36 and in the decision matrix adopted by the City Council (item D-22, page 31) to describe the park concept. Regarding geographic features, the park is crescent-shaped. Based upon the Park Department's criteria, we believe that the only appropriate name is Blakeley Crescent Park.

Thank you for considering the recommendation of the Laurelhurst Community Club.

Sincerely,

Jeannie Hale, President
